Sties are fluid-filled sacs under the skin that can collect bacteria that are transmitted to the eye, causing an infection called blepharitis. Blepharitis can cause eye redness, swelling, tenderness, and discharge. When it affects the eyelids, it is known as blepharoconjunctivitis, also known as “style” or “folliculitis of the eyelids.”
