Once upon a time, Princep Ghat was regarded as the grandest monument in Kolkata. It was constructed for replacing the Chandpal Ghat. In 1875, after the welcoming of the Prince of Wales namely Albert Edward at the Princep Ghat; the spot was considered to be the witnesses of almost all visits by the Royals.

The place bears a similar resemblance to the Brandenburg Gate of Berlin. The monument comprises Ionian columns that hold the roofs in white color. Since 2001, the place has remained under maintenance that has helped in preserving the glory even today.
